Boston's South End

Boston's South End lies south of the Back Bay, northwest of South Boston, northeast of Roxbury, north of Dorchester, and southwest of Bay Village. Despite the name, it is not directly south of the center of downtown Boston.

The South End with its blocks of Victorian brick row houses, many newly built or newly rennovated loft buildings, upscale restaurants, and art galleries has become one of the most popular places to live in Boston. Revitalization of this neighborhood began in the 1960s and today the neighborhood is filled with a diverse mix of families, young professionals, a gay and lesbian community, and is teaming with art. Trendy restaurants brush shoulders with coffee shops and mom-and-pop grocery stores along Tremont Street and its charming, park-filled side streets.
